Research Project:
Which Young Adults Are At Risk for Long-Term Health Issues After Pneumonia?

Grant Awarded:

  • ACRC Pilot Grant

Research Topics:

  • clinical research
  • epidemiology

Research Disease:

  • pneumonia

While pneumonia is the most common infectious cause of death worldwide, the bulk of illness and death from pneumonia is actually in the years following recovery from the acute illness. The long-term health consequences after pneumonia, including increased risk of heart disease, repeated episodes of pneumonia, exacerbations of chronic lung disease, and increased mortality makes it evident that pneumonia is not a self-limited, isolated event. Much of the research on long-term recovery after pneumonia is in older adults with underlying chronic disease. However, we know that the prevention strategies are most effective in younger individuals. We will evaluate the specific health burdens in healthy young adults after pneumonia and determine ways to identify those at risk for long-term issues.
