Diane S., VA

I was diagnosed with asthma at 3 months of age. Due to this disease, I was hospitalized often from that point until the age of 7.

Asthma caused me to live a sheltered life due to the fear of an exacerbation. I was rarely allowed to play outside, run, swim or participate in any other outdoor activities because of poor air quality and the limited awareness of my teachers with regards to my disease. Everyone seemed to be afraid that I might have an attack, so many times I was forced to sit on the sidelines.

More education to the public on asthma treatment, control and triggers can help children that suffered as I did to enjoy all the activities of an active childhood. Making sure the air quality is sufficient for children to breathe is essential.
