Can a Spa Day Improve Your Lung Health?

Local wellness center partners with Lung Association LUNG FORCE Walk, September 29

A spa day. We all need one. It's meant to relax and revitalize the body and mind, but what about the lungs? Jennifer DiGiandomenico of Stella Luna Counseling and Wellness, a local wellness center, says, “Yes, several spa-like therapies, like halotherapy, are designed to support and enhance lung health.”

That’s why her local business is partnering with the American Lung Association to support the upcoming 10th annual LUNG FORCE Walk at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo on September 29.

“We are committed to holistic wellness. By working together, we can advance health education, support research and engage with the community to promote holistic wellness. We are passionate about making a positive impact and are always excited to join forces with like-minded organizations to enhance the well-being of our community,” said DiGiandomenico.

So which spa-like treatments support lung health? Halotherapy, for example, helps with mucus clearance which improves airflow and reduces symptoms associated with conditions like asthma and COPD, according to DiGiandomenico. Halotherapy involves relaxing and breathing in microscopic particles of salty air emitted into the room by a halogenerator. She says the therapy has anti-Inflammatory effects which reduces inflammation in the airways, alleviating symptoms of chronic bronchitis and emphysema.

“There’s also a therapy like a full spectrum dry heat sauna which enhances blood circulation. This improves blood flow to the lungs and respiratory muscles, aiding in overall lung function and recovery. Yoga enhances lung capacity and efficiency through techniques such as diaphragmatic breathing and alternate nostril breathing,” she said.

Stella Luna Counseling and Wellness is hosting a complimentary yoga session at the LUNG FORCE Walk at 8:30am in front of the Rhinos. They’ll also be providing tai chi, reiki sessions and much more throughout the event.

The LUNG FORCE Walk is held to support lifesaving research, local programs and advocacy for the 1.6 million people in Ohio suffering from lung disease.

In addition to a fun, family environment and health screenings, participants will enjoy a 5K route (untimed) through the Cleveland Zoo (which will be closed to the public during the event) or they can choose a shorter 1-mile option.

The Lung Association encourages you to join us at this community event for celebration, education and comradery. Registration for individuals and teams for the LUNG FORCE Walk is free, but fundraising is encouraged to support the mission of the American Lung Association. Participants will receive complimentary Zoo admission and free parking at the event if they arrive by 9:30 a.m.
