Orlando Takes Steps to End Lung Cancer at LUNG FORCE Run/Walk on May 3

American Lung Association’s 11th annual event, held at Baldwin Park, funds lifesaving research and public health initiatives

On Saturday, May 3, the Orlando community will unite as one mighty force for lung health. Hundreds of participants will join the American Lung Association in Florida, lacing up their sneakers to participate in the 11th annual LUNG FORCE Run/Walk, presented by AdventHealth. The family-friendly event, known for its celebratory and welcoming atmosphere, will take place at scenic Baldwin Park.

The LUNG FORCE Run/Walk provides critical funds for lifesaving lung cancer research, early detection initiatives and awareness outreach in vulnerable communities. The Run/Walk, which features a 5K route around Lake Baldwin, is open to individuals of all fitness levels, lung cancer survivors, caregivers, families and company teams.

“Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer deaths in the U.S., but there is hope. Funding research, promoting lung cancer screening and reducing stigma around the disease is the key to unlocking a future free of lung cancer and lung disease,” said Kent Smith, LUNG FORCE Run/Walk event co-chair. “Join us to honor the memory of those we’ve lost to lung cancer and lift up those who need our support. Let’s make every step count to save lives!”

Debra Smith, a Stage IV lung cancer survivor who serves on the LUNG FORCE Run/Walk Cabinet with her husband, added: “Research is the reason I’m here. My type of lung cancer is treatable, not curable, and there’s no telling when my treatment will stop working. It’s critical that our community comes together to support research that may lead to a cure. My life, and the lives of many others, depends on it.”

From now until May 3, all donations made to the LUNG FORCE Run/Walk will be matched 1:1 up to $10,000 by a local benefactor. This Matching Gift Challenge is designed to inspire community members to help support a better future for all patients living with lung cancer and their loved ones.

“We’re encouraging the community to join us on May 3. Create a new team or walk with Team Deb,” said the Smiths. “You can make a difference and help get us closer to a cure.”

The LUNG FORCE Run/Walk supports lifesaving research, programs and advocacy for the more than 525,000 people in the Orlando area living with lung disease, including lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma. More than 18,500 Floridians are estimated to be diagnosed with lung cancer this year alone.
