Lung Health Is Being Irreparably Harmed by Devastating Cuts at HHS

Today, according to multiple reports, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has made devastating cuts to its agencies including the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and National Institutes of Health (NIH). In response, Harold Wimmer, President and CEO of the American Lung Association, issued the following statement:

“Today is a good day for Big Tobacco and a bad day for anyone with lungs. HHS reductions have completely eliminated lifesaving programs, including CDC’s National Asthma Control Program, CDC’s Office of Smoking and Health, CDC’s Global Tuberculosis Program, parts of the FDA’s Center for Tobacco Products, and many more staff and programs that are critical to the health of the children and adults across the nation. The American Lung Association is deeply concerned by these developments. We urge Congress to act swiftly and preserve and protect our nation’s biomedical and public health system.”
