This is the 14th year of the Fight For Air Climb Buffalo. For the event, participants will have the option to climb 594 steps up 32 flights to the top of the skyscraper, or they can join the “Ultimate Climb” as a more intense challenge and do the route twice (64 floors, 1,188 steps). The event also invites area firefighters and first responders to participate in the Firefighter Challenge, climbing the steps in full gear to raise critical awareness for occupational exposure and increased risk for lung disease in first responders. To date over 150 firefighters have registered from 30 departments for the Buffalo Medical Group Firefighter Challenge.
“Our Fight for Air Climb events are for anyone and everyone that wants to raise awareness for lung disease,” said Kaelyn Gates, senior development director of the Lung Association in Western New York. “In Western New York, we are especially proud to have a huge firefighter and first responder community participate in the event, to remind the world that lung disease is a critical issue for so many heroes and their families. We are proud to climb alongside them as we work for a world free of lung disease.”
“As a long-time supporter of the American Lung Association and the Fight for Air Climb, we are proud to stand alongside our fellow community members and own team members to support lung health each year,” said Michael Ball, vice president, community affairs, Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield. “Together, at Seneca One, we will climb for a meaningful cause that impacts so many of our loved ones and neighbors.”
Joining the Fight For Air Climb supports the work of the Lung Association to defeat lung cancer, improve the air we breathe, reduce the burden of lung disease on individuals and their families, and eliminate tobacco use and tobacco-related diseases. With Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield and Buffalo Medical Group participating as leading sponsors, additional community sponsors include AstraZeneca, Great Lakes Cancer Care and Southtowns Radiology.
