Heeding the Call: Area Firefighters Unite to Raise Awareness of Lung Disease at Fight For Air Climb

150 firefighters will participate in American Lung Association event at Promenade Tower on May 3

On Saturday, May 3, more than 150 firefighters from five departments across the Atlanta area will join the American Lung Association to raise awareness and critical funds for people living with lung disease. They will scale 40 stories of Promenade Tower, one of the city’s tallest skyscrapers as part of the Fight For Air Climb Atlanta.

“The mission of the American Lung Association hits home with firefighters and first responders. Unhealthy air is an occupational hazard, and we are at a higher risk of developing chronic respiratory issues and lung disease,” said Douglas Kerns, firefighter with the Dalton Fire Department and one of the Lung Association’s top fundraising firefighters. “Supporting the Atlanta Climb is an extension of our commitment to saving lives. By rallying together, we can make a positive impact for lung health and our communities.”

Firefighters with Gwinnett County Fire & Emergency Services are long-time supporters of the Atlanta Climb, and the department has one of the largest teams. They are rallying new members to join in this year.

“The Atlanta Fight For Air Climb is all about camaraderie and family—that’s what keeps us coming back,” said Brian Martin, firefighter/EMT with Gwinnett County Fire & Emergency Services and team captain. “We climb every year on behalf of people who can’t. They’re counting on us to represent them by raising awareness and funds to support the Lung Association’s mission.”

The event also offers the opportunity for friendly competition. Each team is competing for Fastest Firefighter Team and Highest Fundraising Firefighter Team. There are also individual awards for Fastest Firefighter (male and female). During the Quick Dress Firefighter Competition, presented by City of Hope Cancer Center Atlanta, firefighters will race to dress in their gear with top finishing times ranging between 20 to 25 seconds.

While stair-climbing is par for the course for firefighters, the Atlanta Climb is designed for every type of participant—you determine your pace. Join these everyday heroes and hundreds of participants at the 19th annual Fight For Air Climb Atlanta at Promenade Tower on May 3. For more information, visit ClimbAtlanta.org.

The American Lung Association has continued admiration for all our local firefighters and emergency responders and is thankful for their continued support of the Fight For Air Climb. Information and resources for firefighters to safeguard their lung health is available here.
