The definition of stigma is a mark or brand of disgrace associated with a particular circumstance or quality. Unfortunately, there is a stigma associated with lung cancer, which is felt by many. Lung cancer stigma negatively affects every facet of the lung cancer experience. It impacts lung cancer awareness, funding and support available to patients. The Lung Association is committed to understanding stigma and taking steps to address it.

Through our research, we’ve developed guidelines for addressing stigma and messaging that helps reduce stigma and unite the lung cancer community. Stigma is a complex issue that demands a multifaceted approach. As efforts to reduce the stigma associated with lung cancer move forward, everyone has a role to play.
