I tried and failed several times to quit smoking tobacco. Each time I failed I would beat myself up verbally, labeling my failure as evidence that I was defective and lacking in willpower because I was unable to kick the habit. Once I accepted my failures as PART of the quitting process and not an occasion for moral condemnation, I was successful. Also, flavored toothpicks helped by giving my hands something to do and providing oral sensations. That was thirty years ago.
