Enrolling in Quality and Affordable Health Coverage

Are you or a family member looking to enroll in quality, affordable health coverage? The Lung Association has information and resources to help you keep or find coverage that fits your needs.

Coverage Through Medicaid

Medicaid provides coverage to low-income individuals and families, adults with disabilities, and people who are pregnant or elderly. Medicaid eligibility criteria varies by state, so you should check with your state’s Medicaid office here to see if you and your family are eligible. Eligible individuals can apply at any time.

It’s important to keep your contact information up-to-date with Medicaid so they can reach you when you need to renew coverage. If you lose coverage and believe that it was a mistake, you should immediately contact your state’s Medicaid program to re-enroll if possible. If you lose your Medicaid coverage due to changes in eligibility, you may be eligible for financial assistance to purchase coverage through the Affordable Care Act marketplaces.

Coverage Through the ACA Marketplaces

Open enrollment for state marketplace plans is November 1 – January 15, although some states have longer or shorter enrollment periods. If you are getting married, having a baby, losing other insurance coverage, moving or your income is less than 150% of the federal poverty level in your state, you can enroll for healthcare at any time.

Coverage Through Medicare

Seniors above 65 and some younger individuals with disabilities receive coverage through Medicare. Every fall—from October 15 to December 7—there is a Medicare Open Enrollment Period, when individuals eligible for Medicare can change their Medicare Advantage plan, supplemental plan or prescription drug coverage for the following year.

Buyer Beware: “Junk” Plans

When searching for quality, affordable coverage, it’s important to avoid plans that don’t include key patient protections. These plans may not cover necessary healthcare or may put patients at risk for significant costs if they get sick.
