2024 Lung Health Barometer

A national survey to gauge awareness and understanding of lung cancer.

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in the U.S., and despite its undeniable impact on our nation, the disease often remains in the shadows. It is estimated that about 235,000 Americans will be diagnosed with lung cancer this year.

The 2024 Lung Health Barometer surveyed a nationally representative sample of 4,000 women and men about their awareness and understanding of lung cancer. Survey data reveals that only 28% of respondents were aware that lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in the U.S.

According to the 2024 Lung Health Barometer, only 38% of respondents were familiar with the availability of lifesaving lung cancer screening.

73% of adults have not spoken with their doctor about their risk for lung cancer and only 42% are concerned they might get the disease.
70% of survey respondents agreed they felt hopeful that the outcomes for those impacted by lung cancer improved over the past 10 years.
Only 10% of adults believed that lung cancer is among the most likely cancers to affect women while 35% believed that it was among those likely to affect men.
Greater awareness of lung cancer is key to securing research funding, encouraging lung cancer screening and reducing the stigma around this disease.
